President’s Report

Suburban Terrace Civic Association July 2025 President’s Report

Hello neighbors!

The summer heat is here! Let’s make sure to take care of ourselves and our pets during the extreme heat. A few tips that can help:

1. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids and make sure fresh water is accessible for your pets.

2. Wear appropriate clothing. Light colored, light weight, loose fitting clothing made of breathable material allows your body to cool itself.

3. If possible, avoid going outside from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. This is usually the hottesttime of the day. If you can plan for you and your pets to stay inside during this time, it would be best.

4. Avoid cooking indoors if possible. Ovens and cooktops create heat that will warm up your house. Keep this in mind when planning your meals.

5. Sidewalks get HOT! Please be mindful of our 4-legged family members and their paw pads. Avoid walks during the hottest part of the day.

6. Please check on your neighbors. Members of our community who are elderly, have health issues or other special needs may need help in this extreme heat. Be a good neighbor.

May 13, 2025, Meeting Recap

JPSO

Thankfully, our JPSO did not have much to report for our area. Only a few minor incidents that were quickly resolved.

We have had a request from a member to have the issue of off-road vehicles (golf carts, 4wheelers, motorized scooters) driving on our neighborhood streets addressed. We will have our JPSO representatives field questions and provide answers to all concerns.

As always, we thank the members of the JPSO for helping to keep our STCA community one of the safest in Jefferson Parish. Remember, they cannot do it alone. They need help from the community. If you see activity in your neighborhood that doesn’t look right, please report it to the proper authority.

Angela DeSoto – JP Director of Engineering

Ms. DeSoto gave us a comprehensive overview of all the departments within Jefferson Parish. She explained the function of each department and how to contact them. These different departments can help our citizens who need guidance on where to report a problem in our neighborhood. She provided us with handouts that contained contact information for the different departments. If you were unable to attend or did not pick up a handout, the information can be found on the Jefferson Parish main page:  https://www.jeffparish.gov/838/Services

Neighborhood News

We are getting a new grocery store!

This is such exciting news for our area. From NOLA.com:

Local grocery store chain Canseco’s Market will open its sixth location in the New Orleans area after acquiring a shopping center on Jefferson Highway.

Canseco’s Market purchased the Azalea Gardens Shopping Center at 3615 Jefferson Highway for $2.5 million, according to Elifin Realty. The grocery store will be in the 29,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by Winn-Dixie and Shoppers Value Foods, next to O’Reilly Auto Parts and Family Dollar.

Cici Canseco, son of founder Sinesio Canseco, said they hope to fully renovate and open the new store within six months.

Canseco said his father worked at Winn-Dixie for 32 years before opening his own grocery, and always remembered the Old Jefferson location performing very well from its opening in 1956 until its closure in 2018.

The new Canseco’s will be the largest of its stores yet and will focus heavily on offering a deli and self-serve hot bar with grab-and-go options.

The store also will be the first to offer a sit-down café area for patrons, which Canseco expects to gain a lot of foot traffic from the Ochsner Health main campus nearby.

Jefferson Parish Council member Deano Bonano, who represents the area, said Old Jefferson residents “have been clamoring” for a new grocery store in the area since the closure of Winn-Dixie.

“It will increase the quality of life and actually make the area more attractive for people looking to move to Old Jefferson,” Bonano said.

This is something our neighborhood has wanted for a long time. Such great news that it will be local grocers who have had a presence in the community for years. We are patiently awaiting the opening. STCA Board Member Suzanne Falgout visited the Metairie Road location and spoke to the manager. They are in the process of completing a total renovation and are hoping to have the store open in 6 months. Suzanne also asked if a member of the Canseco Team could come and talk at our next STCA meeting. Suzanne will keep in touch with them and see if we can have a representative at our September meeting.

As always, we thank our Jefferson Parish Council Member, Deano Bonano and his team for all the work they do to help make our community a better place to live. We appreciate any influence you all may have had in helping to bring Canseco’s into our neighborhood.
