June-July 2017 President’s Report

We would like to thank Director Mitch Theriot and his staff with Jefferson Parish Drainage Department for the excellent presentation. The visual footage presented on screen helped to connect all the dots. I think now I finally understand the complexity of our drainage and the dependence we all have on its performance. A special thanks to Carol Ruholl and Nancy Root with the Golden Age Organization for presenting information regarding the Golden Age Programs. Thanks to all of the members in attendance, your support is uplifting.

WOW, Tropical Storm Cindy was a wakeup call for me to get prepared for Hurricane season. It is more important than ever for me to be prepared as my parents are at the beautiful ages of 91 and 81. My responsibility to make sure I am ready so that I may care for all of their needs is paramount to their sense of security. Our next general membership meeting will be all that and more.

The general membership meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Jefferson Playground, Golden Age Center. The doors will open at 6:30 pm and we will start promptly at 7:00 pm. Our guest speaker will be provided by Jefferson Parish Department of Emergency Management (JPEOC). They will present the updated information concerning Hurricane Preparedness in Jefferson Parish. Our second speaker is Bo Rodriguez owner of Bridge City Power Equipment. His presentation topic is generator safety. “When in doubt safety counts.” All the information provided will be crucial for your hurricane preparedness. This meeting will also have some great door prizes. Do not forget to get your ticket at the door for the raffle. We thank anyone in advance for donating a dessert for the community table and we will most graciously accept all.

Also please mark your calendars for our September general membership meeting. The date is September 12, 2017 at 7:00 pm at Jefferson Playground, Golden Age Center. We are working hard to put together a presentation on the newest information for self-defense. As the crime rate is souring around us we need to make sure we are educated in all aspects of defense.

Please continue to pray for our neighbor Rep. Steve Scalise and his family.

We wish you all a Lazy Labor Day Holiday.

April-May 2017 President’s Report

Our March meeting was very well attended and I would like to thank all the members who were able to come out and support your civic association. Our guest speaker, State Representative Cameron Henry, shared vital information about the state’s budget crisis, what new taxes may result and where cuts would be necessary. His passion and energy for government are apparent. I would like to thank Representative Cameron Henry for his time and information.

The Spring Fling on April 1, 2017 was also well attended. It was a pleasure to see all the little ones from the community making new friends and playing games. The band played some great tunes and there was plenty of food to go around. Jefferson Parish did an outstanding job setting the gym up for us and we truly appreciate their services. We would also like to thank PAWS for bringing some puppies to visit with us. My officers and board members made it all possible and STCA has truly been blessed with their service to our neighborhood. I would like to thank some wonderful members whom showed up early and helped out wherever they were needed. A special thanks to Mike Doyle and his family for not only donating the ice but bringing it to us. Congrats to all the winning members that walked away with the beautiful fresh flower arrangements. In all, we had over 70 members attend.

Our next general membership meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Jefferson Playground, Golden Age Center. The doors will open at 6:30 pm and we will start promptly at 7:00 pm. Our guest speaker will be Director Mitch Theriot of Jefferson Parish Drainage Department. He will present the updated information concerning drainage in Jefferson Parish. We have had some very heavy rain events in the last several months and we all have concerns about how the drainage infrastructure will affect us. We thank anyone in advance for donating a dessert for the community table and we will most graciously accept all.

Also please mark your calendars for our July general membership meeting. The date is July 11, 2017 at 7:00 pm at Jefferson Playground, Golden Age Center. We are working hard to put together a presentation on the newest information necessary for Hurricane preparedness.

We wish you all a Blessed Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Here’s to hoping your 4th of July will be a BLAST !

March 2017 President’s Report

It has surely been a busy two months, since I accepted the Presidency of the Suburban Terrace Civic Association. I am most grateful to all of the new officers and board members for their loyal participation. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Jefferson Parish and their staff. All of the departments I have contacted have been most helpful in our transition. I would especially like to acknowledge Councilman Paul Johnston’s secretary Margaret, Director Mitch Theriot’s secretary Ms. Williams, Director Amiee Vallot’s secretary Mrs. Jones and Becky Letort in Recreations. Thank you for your patience and willingness to help.

Our next general membership meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Jefferson Playground, Golden Age Center. The doors will open at 6:30 pm and we will promptly start our meeting at 7 PM. We will proudly host State Representative Cameron Henry as our guest speaker. He will be giving us the updates on the congressional session and the special session. We thank anyone in advance for donating a dessert for the table and we will most graciously accept all.

Please mark your calendars for a special event coming up in April. The Event we are looking forward to is our Spring Fling Event, Saturday, April 1, 2017. The event will begin at 11 AM and end at 1 PM . Our event location is the Jefferson Playground Gym. The band Rock’n’Soul will be playing for our entertainment, we will have games for our children, food, drinks and fellowship with our neighbors.

Also please mark your calendar for our May general membership meeting, May 9, 2017 at 7 PM also at Jefferson Playground in the Golden Age Center. Our guest speaker will be Jefferson Parish Director of Drainage Mitch Theriot. He will present to us the updates to drainage in Jefferson Parish and highlight our area.

The Northside of Newman Ave, Dodge Ave, Jefferson Heights Ave, Orleans Ave, and streets in between have been fighting for the new zoning of properties for the last 3 years. This battle began when a developer was allowed to divide a plot of land into 15 small lots which we feel is not conducive to our neighborhood norm. We are happy to announce that on February 22, 2017 the Jefferson Parish council voted to change certain areas in the study to R1 – B. This will help in our fight to keep developers from chopping large lots into 50′ plots. We have been very fortunate to win this battle but we all must continue to support our neighborhood civic association. Our civic association’s strength will only come from a large number of the members whom participate. The larger our membership is, the louder our voices will carry.

Please remember to invite all of your neighbors to join the Suburban Terrace Civic Association. We have many issues to address in our neighborhood to preserve our quality of life that we enjoy everyday. Oschner’s expansion is knocking at our door and many developers are looking at our area to expand. We must all strive to maintain our beautiful community. I look forward to servicing our neighborhood with your help and guidance.

With Gratitude,

Lisa G. Loup

President’s Report November / December 2016

For everyone who helped to make our “Annual Night Out Against Crime Party”, a big success, many thanks. For those of you who attended, the music, food and friends were fantastic. For those of you who missed it, you missed a great time. I would like to thank the Band, Soulful Rock, for giving us some great sound and getting people to dance. I believe everyone had a fantastic time.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 8, 2016, for 7:00 pm, in the Golden Age Center, at Jefferson Playground. Paul Johnston will be our guest speaker along with several Department heads from Jefferson Parish. The topic of discussion will be the process, progress, problems, and hopefully, solutions associated with the Newman avenue Project

We will also have nominations for Officers at this meeting. All offices are up for election including President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Any one wishing to run for these offices should have someone to nominate and another to second their nomination. They must also be present to accept the nomination. If more than one person is nominated for any one office, an election will be held at our January 14, 2017 meeting. All elected officers will be instated into office that night.

The Officers and Advisory Board Members would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Again, our next membership meeting will be Tuesday, November 8th, for 7:00m, in the Jefferson Playground gymnasium on the 2nd floor. I hope to see all of you there.

Vanilla Crescents

Incredibly, these light, crispy and fragrant crescent cookies require only five ingredients to make.vanillacrescents

2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar, plus more for dusting
1 1/2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
Pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 350° and position one rack in the upper third and one in the lower third. Line 2 large
baking sheets with parchment paper. In the bowl of a standing electric mixer fitted with the paddle, beat the butter with 1/2 cup of the confectioners’ sugar until pale white, about 5 minutes. Beat in the vanilla. Add the flour and salt and beat at low speed just until combined. On a lightly floured surface, roll level tablespoons of the dough into 3-inch ropes. Taper the ends slightly and form the ropes into crescents. Carefully transfer the crescents to the baking sheets, about 1/2 inch apart.

Bake the crescents for 22 to 24 minutes, until the bottoms are golden and the tops are pale blond; shift the
baking sheets from top to bottom and front to back halfway through for even baking. Transfer the baking
sheets to racks and let the cookies cool for 10 minutes. Fill a small bowl with confectioners’ sugar. While the cookies are still warm, coat them in the sugar and transfer to a clean sheet of parchment paper to cool slightly. Roll the cooled cookies in the sugar again and let cool completely.

The crescent cookies can be stored in an airtight container between sheets of wax paper for up to 1 week.
Dust the cookies very lightly with confectioners’ sugar before serving.

President’s Report July / August 2016

Our July 12th meeting will be a Hurricane Preparedness Meeting. May 30th marked the beginning of Hurricane
Season. Its time to start preparing. Start making up your to do lists. Be prepared to secure your homes with
either shutters or plywood, which should be at least 5/8ths. of an inch thick, metal shutters should be at least 22ga. metal. Be sure to pick up and secure lawn equipment and patio furniture. Make sure to put your important papers such as insurance policies, birth and marriage certificates, important pictures, car titles and other valuables in a safe, water proof container. Make plans on how to keep in touch with family members. Plan where you might evacuate. Have non perishable food, water, and medication for at least two weeks. As for water, have at least one gallon per person per day. Plan for what to do to secure frozen food. Electricity will probably be off so a good idea, should you not have a generator, is to pack all of your frozen or refrigerated food into garbage bags and put them back in the freezer or refrigerator . This will save a messy, stinky clean up when you return. If you have a generator, be sure to have extra gas, oil and spark plugs in case your electricity is off for a prolonged period of time. You will also need extra gas for your car. You will need batteries for flash lights, radios, and portable TVs. Should you stay, please realize you will be on your own. Police, ambulances and fire rescue will be unavailable during and immediately after the storm. Hospitals, gas stations, and stores will be closed. Please if you are going to stay, be PREPARED!!!

Check on your elderly neighbors and relatives and make sure they are safe and have means to evacuate.
Should you decide to evacuate, follow contra flow procedures. Stay informed by watching television or listening to
the radio to see when contraflow will begin. Get out early to avoid traffic problems. Make plans as to where you will go ,make reservations before you leave. Bring snacks and drinks with you, you may be on the road for hours. Check for broken or falling limbs in trees for these could become dangerous projectiles in hurricane force winds. Have a well prepared first aid kit available. Fill all propane tanks especially if you have an electric stove, at least you will be able to prepare meals on a portable burner or bar-b-que pit.

When the storm is over, look out for and stay away from fallen power lines as they may still be energized especially if they are in water or in trees for they may energize the whole tree. Notify either Entergy, police, or Jefferson Parish if possible. Do not drive on flooded streets as you may push flood waters into someone’s home or business. If possible, get in touch with family and friends to let them know how you are doing or if they will be able to return home.

You could encounter wild or injured animals, please stay clear as they could be dangerous. Make sure all of
your shots, including tetanus are up to date. Remember, you will probably be under a curfew so stay as close to
home as possible.

It is also a good time to remind everyone to keep the drains and curbs clean and free of leaves and debris this
time of year. Not only for hurricanes but this is the time of year we get heavy rains and flash floods. Keeping the
drains free of debris could keep you or your neighbors homes from flooding so lets work together to keep our neighborhood clean of leaves and debris.

Remember our next meeting is Tuesday July 12th at 7:00pm, in the Golden Age Center at Jefferson Playground.

Thank you,
Kennith J. Lassalle
